March 9, 2011
The NH Bio/Medical Council announced its newly formed "Judd Gregg NH Bio/Medical Internship Program" at their Annual Awards Banquet held on October 14, 2010 at the Wentworth-by-the-Sea Country Club. The event attracted more than 100 Bio/Medical professionals, educators, and NH companies, and proved to be another success for the great state of New Hampshire. This internship program is designed to provide summer internships to students or recent graduates who are considering careers in the life sciences industry. The web site for potential interns and interested companies was recently launched at www.nhbiomed.org/intern. Complete information for sponsors is also available on the web site.
This program will enable students who live in NH and are currently attending school (in-state or otherwise) to participate. In addition to contributing to the health and well-being of all citizens, this life science sector has an economic impact on New Hampshire through job creation, payrolls, and sales of products. This sector also has an indirect impact when businesses purchase materials and services to support the business which leads to additional jobs being created.
In the United States, twenty-five of 1000 employees work in the medical technologies industry. Recent reports show that more than 150 companies are in New Hampshire with over 5,800 employees working for Bio/Medical companies. New Hampshire is one of four states that exceed the national average with sixty-six of 1000 employed in this sector. From 2005 to 2007 employment in this sector increased 15% and is still growing. For each job in this sector at least two additional jobs are created in support industries with the related increase in commerce.
